Pregnancy diet in Chennai: what to expect
What changes in pregnancy
You do not need to "eat for two". ICMR-NIN advises about 350 extra calories a day in the second and third trimesters, more protein and a varied diet. Anaemia is common: in NFHS-5, 52.2% of pregnant women in India were anaemic, so iron-rich foods and your prescribed tablets both matter.
What the plan looks like
Small, regular meals when nausea or heartburn makes big meals hard; dal, greens, eggs or paneer, curd and fruit every day; and plans for gestational diabetes or high blood pressure if your doctor finds them. Keep taking the iron, folic acid and calcium tablets your doctor prescribes: they are medicines, not the supplements we avoid.
After delivery and breastfeeding
Breastfeeding needs more food, not less: ICMR-NIN advises about 600 extra calories a day in the first six months. We plan a gentle return to a healthy weight that protects your milk and your energy, with the traditional foods you trust and no crash diets.
Fees and follow-up
The first consultation is ₹2,000 and includes your personal plan. Programmes of 1, 3 or 6 months (₹12,000, ₹30,000, ₹50,000) add review calls and plan changes. Results vary from person to person, so we do not promise numbers or dates.

Questions
Questions people ask
How much extra should I eat during pregnancy?
Not double. ICMR-NIN advises about 350 extra calories a day in the second and third trimesters, for example an extra small meal with dal, curd or an egg. Your dietitian adjusts this to your weight and health.
Can I lose weight while breastfeeding?
Gently, yes. Breastfeeding needs extra energy, so crash diets are not safe. A slow, steady loss with enough protein, fluids and calories protects your milk and your energy.
Do you plan diets for gestational diabetes?
Yes, together with your obstetrician, so your sugar stays in range while you and your baby get enough nutrition.
Should I stop my iron and calcium tablets if I eat well?
No. Keep taking what your doctor prescribes. Food and tablets work together in pregnancy.
Which foods should I avoid in pregnancy?
Your obstetrician will guide you. Common advice is to avoid alcohol, limit caffeine, and avoid raw or undercooked meat and eggs and unpasteurised milk. We plan safe swaps within your home food.
